This “Ice Curtain” is the view from behind the LaSalle Canyon waterfall. The different tones in the ice made by the varying thicknesses. This photograph is also my entry for this week’s Monochrome Madness.

The land that the park is on is made up of sandstone. It is very soft and porous, you can scratch it with a stick. The canyons were made when the glaciers from the last ice age moved across Illinois. When there are heavy rains and the waterfalls are flowing at full force the splashing water washes away some of the sandstone. That particular waterfall has carved a large indent in the sandstone making it possible to walk behind the waterfall.
I was standing on the back side of the ice formation looking out at the canyon. It really is a magical place when you happen to visit at the right times of the year.
